Ba-Gawk! A Visit to Ty Llwyd Farm

The kids had a field trip through their summer camp to Ty Llwyd Farm on Sound Avenue in Jamesport (south side of the road, just east of Manor Lane). I can't resist taking photos and sharing them with... you!

With all the world now wanting cage-free eggs from chickens fed civilized chicken food, this farm is a gold mine for North Forkers. It's a chicken resort! For breakfast, I fried up some of the eggs the kids collected yesterday, and I can tell you they were especially delicate and delicious--or maybe I'm just one hell of a good cooker.

Mr. and Mrs. Wines raise DeKalb Golds, a Rhode Island Red variety of chicken that produces brown eggs. They live cage-free in spacious wire pens that allow freedom of movement. There are also ducks and geese, vegetables, some fruits, and unusual varieties of potatoes. Ty Llwyd (pronounced “tea clue´id”) has been an active farm since 1870. They are among the farms you can visit on the North Fork Foodies Tour in September (see the NorthForkParents Calendar of Events for more info). They're open year round.

This is a photo of an outdoor area the chickens can roam around in:

This is a photo of the chickens having a little nibble:

This is a photo showing Mrs. Wines and Monkey collecting eggs from the trays and putting them ever so gently into their baskets:

Next is a photo in the shack with the egg grader, which sorts the eggs by size--jumbo, extra large, large, medium, and small. The eggs are placed with other similarly sized eggs into cartons (return your cartons, please) and labeled:

Next is a photo of where Mrs. Wines stores her eggs for when customers drive up:

I hope you've enjoyed your little tour, I know we did. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Wines for your gracious hospitality!

I love this place! I didn't know they allowed field trips. I used to teach on the North Fork, and would always stop there for my eggs and whatever else they had for sale that week. When Little Sir was nearly 2 we stopped there to see the baby chicks, and she was very gracious, showing him around. Mrs. has a lovely accent, too, doesn't she?

Cool. And for those of us who eat meat, free range chicken is really good, guilt free and it is virtually impossible to get salmonella from free range chicken. If you know how commercial chicken is raised and processed, you'll know why. Great photos (as always), Nancy!
